Our Favorite Pre-K Books!

Pre-K… our first adventure in homeschooling!! We have enjoyed it so much! We chose Sonlight Christian Homeschooling Curriculum, level Pre-K 4/5, back in the fall and it has been a wonderful fit for us. Along the way, we also added in extra learning activities, subjects, books, and more as our little man was asking questions and showing interest in all kinds of things! It has been an amazing adventure and I cannot believe how far he has come in only one year!

I attribute a lot of his success to the books that we have enjoyed over the school year! It never ceases to amaze me how much little kids learn and retain, so we try to make it as fun as possible!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

As our pre-K year comes to an end, we thought it fitting to share with you some of our favorite books that we have discovered through our curriculum and through our own research and play! We hope you enjoy them!

INDESCRIBABLE: 100 Devotions About God & Science.

If this is the only book that you buy from our list, I would encourage you to get it! We have had so many wonderful conversations by simply incorporating a daily devotional into our routine and this one is excellent!!

Usborne Illustrated Stories from Aesop

We loved this book because it had all of the traditional and well loved characters and stories, but also included great moral lessons for discussion and review! We often saved this one for bedtime.

The Berenstain Bears’ Big Book of Science and Nature

This fantastic book was part of our Sonlight curriculum. We both ended up loving it! So much to learn and explore! It’s an amazing introduction to science and nature for little people!

A Treasury of Mother Goose

Not only did we love reading all of the traditional Mother Goose stories, but this book helped my little guy make huge leaps in identifying rhyming words. Rhyming activities, and pattern work, are often thought to help children in the strengthening of other literacy skills as well.

See Inside Your Body

One of our favorite things about this book is that it’s “lift the flap!” I cannot tell you how much that helped my little guy understand where things are and why! He loved it!

A bonus to having this book was when a family member was in the hospital and our little guy would ask questions, we could open up this book and explain what the machines were reading. Suddenly, the experience was a lot less scary for him.

Inside Your Outside

Who doesn’t love Cat in the Hat?! We stumbled onto this amazing anatomy book for little people and my little guy could not get enough of it! It has so much detailed and educational information packed into it, but it’s fun and silly and has lots of amazing graphics!

The Goodbye Book

I had to throw this book in here because during our son’s pre-k year, we lost a very dear family member and a very beloved pet within a week of each other. It can be so hard for little people to process what is going on and how they feel, but this book was fantastic and age-appropriate. It was simple and relatable and helped us to start conversations about loss and the feelings and emotions that go with it.

The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book

This was one of our Sonlight curriculum books and some of our ABSOLUTE FAVORITE reading throughout the school year! The short stories are from all over the world and have fantastic illustrations and moral lessons! My kid loves to look over my shoulder as I read these aloud, whether during school time or at bedtime! This book was a lot of fun for us this year and we highly recommend it.

What’s Under The Sea?

This book was part of our Sonlight curriculum. We really enjoyed pairing it with National Geographic or other Netflix or Amazon Prime exploration videos and documentaries that covered the topics in the book! We would only cover a page or two each day, but my little guy was super excited about this book every time we pulled it out!

What is Poop?

I cannot tell you why my son loves this book so much, but he does! Anytime you ask him what book he wants to read, it’s either this one or the one below, What are Germs? He just loves that these books are lift-the-flap and I love that he is asking us to read to him and that he’s enjoying learning!

What are Germs?

I cannot tell you why my son loves this book so much, but he does! Anytime you ask him what book he wants to read, it’s either this one or the one above, What is Poop? He just loves that these books are lift-the-flap and I love that he is asking us to read to him and that he’s enjoying learning! Plus, it teaches him good hygiene!

The Children’s Book of Virtues

Again, this was one of our Sonlight curriculum books. It is a collection of short stories and poems with a focus on helping to build character. The topics include courage, hard work, self-discipline, compassion, faith, honesty, loyalty, friendship and more. At times, this book felt a little too old for my pre-K kiddo, but the stories opened up discussions that were 100% worth it!

“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” ~ Maya Angelou

Because a Little Bug went KA-CHOO!

Let’s face it…sometimes we love a book simply because it causes our kid(s) to ask us to read it over and over. This book, and Are You My Mother (below), held that magic for my little guy. He loved hearing the story of how the little bug went KA-CHOO and then all the things that followed as a result. Anything that gets my little guy excited about reading time is a win in my book!!

Are You My Mother?

Let’s face it…sometimes we love a book simply because it causes our kid(s) to ask us to read it over and over. This book, and Because a Little Bug went KA-CHOO! (above), held that magic for my little guy. He loved hearing the story of how a little bird went on an adventure to find his mother. Anything that gets my little guy excited about reading time is a win in my book!!

On The Train (Shine-A-Light)

This was one of those “just for fun” books that my kiddo loved this year! Sometimes it’s less about what facts we can learn in a book and more about helping them find the joy in holding a book and exploring it! My little guy loves flashlights and this “Shine-A-Light” book allows him to shine a flashlight behind the pages and find hidden pictures!

…and of course, it would be remiss of me if I did not share with you some of our favorite books about BUGS and DINOSAURS, two common topics in our house during the pre-K year!

Ultimate Bug-Opedia

We loved this book simply because bugs and insects were a huge topic of interest in our house this year and the pictures and facts in this book were fascinating! In some ways, this book was a bit too old for my 4 year-old, but he still loved it!

On Beyond Bugs! All About Insects (Cat in the Hat)

This Cat in the Hat is not quite as catchy as some of the others, but we still enjoyed going through it page by page and learning all about different insects!

Big Book of Big Bugs

This book has huge fold-out pages with actual-size images of bugs from around the world! The illustrations are quite beautiful!

Big Book of Big Dinosaurs

This book spans a broad age range, with pre-K being right in the middle to upper end of the recommended age for audience, but if you have a dino-loving kiddo in your house (like we do), this book is fun and has fantastic facts and illustrations!
