Homemade Play Dough (and letter recognition)
(Recipe 👀👇🏻) … Any learning process that involves hands-on play is a win in our house and this homemade play dough continues to be a favorite with my little guy! (Bonus: We use it to make and identify our letters! He’s having a blast and learning at the same time! 🎉) If you’ve never made homemade play dough, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is! I’ve included my favorite recipe below… Have fun!
2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
1/3 cup salt
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Food coloring
Instructions: Pour all ingredients into a medium mixing bowl. I usually start the mixing process to keep the flour and Cream of Tartar from going everywhere, but once I have those ingredients mixed in, I allow my little guy to go to town with the whisk and finish it off. He loves it! Pour your mixture into a small pot over medium to low heat and stir constantly. I use a spoon to stir the pot while it’s cooking because the dough will clump inside a whisk and may not cook evenly. Play dough “cooks” very quickly so watch it closely. As you stir, the mixture will thicken. Once it begins to clump all together into one ball, remove from heat and carefully drop into wax paper. Allow the dough to cool and then knead out any lumps. If needed, add in some water if your dough is slightly dry. It’s not difficult, but it’s a bit of an art.
Now get creative! Practice letters, numbers, shapes, etc with your pre-schooler or pre-kinder kiddo!
Enjoy!
