Pine Cone Thanksgiving Turkey Craft

If you’ve followed our blog for any length of time, you know I’m crazy about three things… my family, being outdoors, and crafting! What makes me giggle is that my five year-old seems to be following in my footsteps. We often come home from a walk or run with a huge pile of leaves, pine cones, acorns, interesting sticks, flowers, and sometimes random rocks all piled in the seat of his Baby Jogger stroller. When asked what he plans to do with all of these things, his answer is always the same… “I’m going to make art, mommy!” Makes this mommy’s heart proud!

The other day, we came home from a short jog and he had these Mimosa tree seed pods tucked in our stroller. Initially, we had planned to make dragonflies out of them, but then my dad suggested a turkey and, as it turns out, we just happened to have a collection of pine cones in the stroller as well (eye roll). Haha! So, since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, it just seemed fitting to go that route.

This Craft Project Required Very Little Prep & Only a Few Materials:

  • Mimosa Tree Seed Pods
  • Pine Cone
  • Paint Supplies
    • We used red, brown, green, yellow, and orange paint.
  • Google Eyes
  • Construction Paper
    • We used red, yellow, and brown construction paper.
  • Scissors
  • Glue… To glue the project together, we used a hot glue gun (handled by adults only), but if you want little ones to be more hands-on during this step, the face could be pieced together with a glue stick prior to attaching it to the pine cone itself.
